Proverbs 3:13-18 Abigail’s Godly Wisdom

Proverbs 3:19-20

13 How blessed is the man who finds wisdom And the man who gains understanding. 14 For her profit is better than the profit of silver And her gain better than fine gold. 15 She is more precious than jewels, And nothing you desire compares with her. 16  Long life is in her right hand; In her left hand are riches and honor. 17 Her ways are pleasant ways And all her paths  “are peace. 18  She is a tree of life to those who take hold of her, And happy are all who hold her fast.

Behind every great man is a great woman is a proverb that first heard in the mid-1940s, this woman is usually a wife or mother. The phrase was first quoted when a quarterback received a trophy and said,”’They say behind every great man there’s a woman. While I’m not a great man, there’s a great woman behind me.’ Abigail is a biblical woman who was full of wisdom, wiser than her wealthy husband,  Nabal. She is introduced in 1 Samuel 25,  David Is in  the run in the wilderness with his men, avoiding King Saul trying to kill David. David knows a feast day is coming and know of a business name Nabal who owns 3,000 sheep and 1,000 goats. David’s men have been hanging with the shepherds of Nabal, peacefully and they are some form of protection for Nabal’s sheep and workers. As a request, David asks to take part in the feast that is coming, so that he and his soldier can have a festive meal together as an act of friendship. Nabal refuses David’s request and even calls him and men a band of outlaws. David was very offended by Nabal’s insult and set up his men to go after Nabal, he called for 4oo to go and left 200 behind.  Nabal’s wife  Abigail learned David’s men coming after her husband and wanted to save him. She acted very quick, order bread to be baked, a bunch of wine, sheep to be prepared, raisins, and tasty fig cakes. When all was complete she sent it and wasn’t far behind.  David’s men  were angry and wishing for Nabal’s death, but Abigail was very wise and knew David was royalty when she greeted him, she bowed down and ask him to accept the banquet she had bought for him. She asks forgiveness for her husband’s short temper and pleases to accept all the delicious food and wine as payment for her apology. David even gave thanks to God, for her wisdom, saying if she had not reacted so fast, David would have committed murder as an act of revenge. In her absences, her  husband Nabal was having a wild party as a king scriptures say and he was very drunk. The next morning when Nabal was sober and awake, Abigail told him what she did and Nabal had a stroke. His reaction was that he had a stroke, paralyzed as a stone, and died 10 days later cause scripture says the Lord struck him dead. Had Nabal had the wisdom of his wife, he would have lived longer, none of his wealth saved him and most likely David inherited it when he married Abigail, cause no smart man can refuse a beautiful godly woman virtuous love. God bless you all, the Bridegroom Jesus loves you and so do I.  Samuel J Head

1 Samuel 25:32  Then David said to Abigail: “Blessed is the Lord God of Israel, who sent you this day to meet me! 33 And blessed is your advice and blessed are you, because you have kept me this day from coming to bloodshed and from avenging myself with my own hand. 34 For indeed, as the Lord God of Israel lives, who has kept me back from hurting you, unless you had hurried and come to meet me, surely by morning light no males would have been left to Nabal!”
