Luke 18:1-8 Unjust Judge and Persistent Prayers

Luke 18:1-8

Now He was telling them a parable to show that at all times they ought to pray and not to lose heart, 2 saying, “In a certain city there was a judge who did not fear God and did not respect man. 3 There was a widow in that city, and she kept coming to him, saying, ‘Give me legal protection from my opponent.’ 4 For a while he was unwilling; but afterward he said to himself, ‘Even though I do not fear God nor respect man, 5 yet because this widow bothers me, I will give her legal protection, otherwise by continually coming she will wear me out.’” 6 And the Lord said, “Hear what the unrighteous judge said; 7 Now, will not God bring about justice for His elect who cry to Him day and night, and will He delay long over them? 8 I tell you that He will bring about justice for them quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will He find faith on the earth?”

Once again Jesus is telling a parable that teaches how important it is to never stop praying to Father God. This time He is using a judge is not godly and really doesn’t love his fellow man, he is just doing a job he was assigned to do. In the time Jesus told this story, women were looked at as second-class people, not even citizens of Rome or Israel. A woman at home alone with no man with her, either a father, husband, or older son, she was just useless. The Amplified English Bible says this widow was [desperate] in her means to get help from the4 judge and repeatedly asking for protection. Maybe her recently deceased husband left her a good amount of money for her to care for herself and the robber wanted to steal it from her. So it is logical to see why she asks for protection, but the judge doesn’t care about her safety or her desperation. Jesus made the point that the judge had no love for God or man, even a weak widow. The desperate are really frightened for her life so she persists in asking the judge over and over, again and again for protection. So one day the judge says to himself I don’t see this woman anymore so I will answer her repeated demands. Now surely God does not hate Himself and surely He loves all mankind, and He does answer prayers, but He also enjoys to hear His children’s voices and He wants to hear them often, The Lord knows what is best for you and He answers in His own time. If He knows if what you ask for in your prayers is good for you His will most definitely answer it in His time. Next time you think of an ungodly judge, or ruler, like President or Senator or Congressman or a king or prime minister, in an unkind way, remember he or she was given that position by God to do that job, so serve him or her with respect. God bless you all, the Lord Jesus loves you and so do I. Samuel J Head
