Luke 18:9-14

9 And He also told this parable to some people who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and viewed others with contempt: 10 “Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee stood and was praying this to himself: ‘God, I thank You that I am not like other people: swindlers, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week; I pay tithes of all that I get.’ 13 But the tax collector, standing some distance away, was even unwilling to lift up his eyes to heaven, but was beating his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, the sinner!’ 14 I tell you, this man went to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

In the gospel of Luke 18:9-14 two men go to the temple and both pray to Father God above. They both must want a kind of relationship with God their Creator. Jesus tells this parable to teach His followers what kind of person, the Lord really can help. Two different kinds of people, who the people of Israel had two different points of view of. The Pharisee was a religious leader that studied the words of God, in both his personal life and as his profession. The tax collectors, who were looked upon as scum of the earth, cause they were usually a person of Israel who took the job to collect taxes for Rome and very often raise the price of the taxes due to earn money for himself. The Pharisee was probably at the temple cause that is where he worked. As he stood there he began to give praise about all the efforts he took, according to God’s word, and even gave God more praise for not being like the scum of the earth like the tax collector and the same house of worship with him. The tax collector gave his recognition to God by begging for help, beating his chest and asking the Lord to show him mercy, and called himself a sinner. Both men may leave the temple the same way they went in, one full of arrogance and the other full humility, but the Lord Jesus finished Him parable by saying the worshipper who admits he is nothing in the presence of God and is asking for the Lord’s help is the one the God will lift up and give him salvation. Those who are stuck on themselves and try to wear their obedience like members-only jackets will be left out of the kingdom of God. God bless you, the Lord Jesus loves you and so do I.
