10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. 11 And after they came into the house, they saw the Child with His mother Mary; and they fell down and worshiped Him. Then they opened their treasures and presented to Him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
The Gift of the Magi, is a Christmas classical short story that seems to be a little less known. It is about a very young married couple Jim and Della Young that is newly married. Just many young newlyweds don’t have much money, but love each other very much. When they see that Christmas coming soon, they want to buy gifts for each other, but they both have very little or no money at all to buy any gift for each other. They love and know each other so much, the husband knows what his wife treasures and likewise so does the wife knows what her husband cherishes. Now Della is a woman who loves her long beautiful hair and she brushes it every day. Jim has a gold pocket watch that his father gave him that also was his grandfather’s but it has no chain for it. Della decides to sell her long beautiful hair to a hairdresser and she gains $20. With her money she buys a platinum pocket watch for Jim. Later when Jim saw his wife had got a beautiful hair cut he was shocked but she told him she did it to buy a lovely chain for his gold watch. He was very happy, but had shown her the gift he had gotten her. It was a set of ornamental combs that he bought with the money he sold his gold watch for. Now both parties were supposed to sacrifice the level sacrifice they had made to buy each other a Christmas gift. The act of love and sacrifice the husband and wife show each other is a Christmas, who should give to others. The Magi that visited and brought gifts to Jesus, it show that they recognize who He was and His purpose. The gold is a normal gift to a king or royalty, (1 Kings 9:28 ) the myrrh serve has double purpose, it is anointment to cover a new king or queen (Esther 2:12) and to also serve as a ornament to cover the body of the dead before it is wrapped, (Mark 14:5-7, John 12:6-8). Frankincense is recognition that Jesus is a deity or as scripture prophecy God with us, ( Isaiah 7:14, Matthew 1:23). The Holy Bible says our prayers are like wonderful incense smoke; only a God can answer prayers like only a deity can, (Revelation 5:7-8, Revelation 8:3-4). We should be like Jim and Della, who are wise enough to sacrifice all their treasure for those who love them. The Magi were wise men who knew Jesus, the new child king, would sacrifice His life for a gift of salvation for all the sinners of the world, for the past, present and the future. God bless you, Immanuel loves you and so do I.
