Free From Slavery The Hymn Amazing Grace True Story

1 Chronicles 17:16-17

16 Then David the king went in and sat before the Lord and said, “Who am I, O Lord God, and what is my house that You have brought me this far? 17 This was a small thing in Your eyes, O God; but You have spoken of Your servant’s house for a great while to come, and have regarded me according to the standard of a man of high degree, O Lord God.

A pastor named John Newton (1725 –  1807) delivered a sermon using this scripture to give to his church. He felt like King David, never worthy of God’s Amazing Grace. He wanted to tell his congregation, he felt unworthy of God’s Amazing Grace & how it led him to be a pastor of God’s word. His story is truly about God’S Amazing Grace, John’s mother Elizabeth, was a God fearing woman who believes in saying about training your children to know God’s word.

Proverbs 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go, Even when he is old he will not depart from it.

After 7 years of teaching her son about Jesus & being his mother, Elizabeth died. His father took John with him & raised him out to sea, cause John’s father John Newton the Elder was a shipmaster. John Newton learn to be like his father, he worked on slave trade ship. John was not a very friendly man & his shipmates didn’t like him, so they abandoned him with a slave trader named Amos Clowe.  He left his wife in charge of John & she treated him as same as the African slaves. Later in his life, he worked himself up to a captain of his own slave trade ship.  Because of John’s mother’s death, his relationship with God was far from loving God. He hated the Lord & he hated Christian, he made it a point to insult them. One day when Newton woke up his ship was in the middle of a violent storm, he was so scared he prayed for God’s mercy & Immediately the storm stop;

Psalm 107:6 Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble; He delivered them out of their distresses.

John Newton marked the date 10 March 1748 the day God opened up his blind eyes. Newton avoided profanity, gambling, & drinking. Later Newton left the slave trade business, he had gain sympathy for the people gave into slavery..  In 1764, he was ordained as an Anglican priest and wrote 280 hymns to accompany his services. He wrote the words for “Amazing Grace” in 1772 (In 1835, William Walker put the words to the popular tune “New Britain”). John Newton became a major force to end slavery in England, & in 1807 the British Empire abolish Slavery, month later Newton passed away. Before John Newton found Jesus & was delivery people into slavery, he was a slave to sin;after John gave his life to Jesus, John became a slave of righteousness.

Romans 6:17 But thanks be to God that though you were slaves of sin, you became obedient from the heart to that form of teaching to which you were committed, 18 and having been freed from sin, you became slaves of righteousness.

Ask yourself, if your life is like a raging storm & you feel like a slave to oppression Satan, ask the Lord Jesus Christ, claim the storm in you chaotic life & in His mercy you also can discover God’s Amazing Grace, which John Newton wrote an amazing hymn about . Do you know how many Christian churches around the world, churches of many different races of God’s people can relate to it & feel like these word’s John Newton Amazing Grace hymn.

. God Bless you, the Lord Jesus Love you & so do I. Sam H.
