James 1:22-25 Mirror Mirror, Is His Image In Me ?

James 1:22-25

22 But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not just hearers who deceive themselves. 23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks at his natural face in a mirror; 24 for once he has looked at himself and gone away, he has immediately forgotten what kind of person he was. 25 But one who has looked intently at the perfect law, the law of freedom, and has continued in it, not having become a forgetful hearer but an active doer, this person will be blessed in what he does.

Have you thought of the word of God as a mirror, I haven’t either but I heard and read it a few times. This book  of James is mostly about putting faith to work and he is saying you and I are either hearers or doers of God’s word. There is an old superstition that if someone breaks a mirror, that person will have bad luck for seven years. The word of God is like a mirror, it can tell you what kind of person you are. One person will pick up the Bible and read a little something, something and they will say to themselves, like I used to, oh this stuff is too hard to keep and it makes me feel bad, then throws it down. People  who read God’s word or even hear in sermon and see words will be affected two ways, take in like good wholesome food and consume it let it become a part of them. Others will say, darn this taste like garbage and spit right back out.  James makes a reference to the perfect law, calls it laws of freedom but many look at the commandments of God as restrictions. Someone who is promiscuous, and isn’t happy with one sexual partner but like to have many and see casual sex as a normal life will look at seventh commandment, (  Exodus 20:14 ) why can’t I commit adultery a casual ses lifestyle is perfectly okay. I even heard a pastor who was preaching a ten commandment series say that seventh commandment is one commandment most Christian are flexible with cause the sinful world says casual promiscuous sex is normal , but a Christian who believes that is only a hearer of God’s perfect law. Being a doer of God’s word is like having a  relationship with Him,we are to be faithful to Him, keep His commandments cause we love Him, ( John 14:15 ). James says those who are doers of God’s word are blessed and they will stay blessed when we stay in His word and faith to His word if we are doers of it . The book of James  is a summary of the sermon on the mount, from Matthew chapter 5, 6 & 7 and all Jesus said in the beatitude, you will be blessed  if you live by the characteristics of the Lord. Being a hearer of God’s  word and not a doer of it, is like breaking a mirror, the image of God a Christian is supposed to have living within them. You and I can’t reflect the image of God if we totally do the opposite of what His word tells us to live and be like. I know for myself, I am not where I wanna be with my walk with God.
