Galatians 5:1-6 and Genesis 34 The Circumcise Sons of Jacob

Galatians 5:1-6

1 It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery. 2 Behold I, Paul, say to you that if you receive circumcision, Christ will be of no benefit to you. 3 And I testify again to every man who receives circumcision, that he is under obligation to keep the whole Law. 4 You have been severed from Christ, you who are seeking to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace. 5 For we through the Spirit, by faith, are waiting for the hope of righteousness.6 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything, but faith working through love.

Is every person that had the mark of circumcision obedient to the law of the Lord? The Holy Bible is full of examples of people who had the mark circumcision, but did not share the true meaning of God’s law. The mark of circumcision, was a sign between God & His people. But God wanted His people to share His love & mercy with others, was & is fill the law of God, especially with those who didn’t deserve love & mercy.

Leviticus 19:18 You shall not take vengeance, nor bear any grudge against the sons of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself; I am the Lord.

There are good examples of circumcision believers of God who wanted revenge rather showing love & mercy for their enemies, which scriptures call their enemies their neighbor. The example comes from Genesis 34; Jacob’s daughter name Dinah, was taken & sexually assaulted. Shechem, Dinah’s attacker, wanted to marry her & asked his father Hamor  the king of the Hivite people. When Jacob learned that his daughter had been violated, he kept the news silent & didn’t tell his son, he probably knew they would have revenge in their uncircumcised in their hearts, no one knows their children better than their father. When his sons heard, they became very angry, which is normal when brothers hear the sister has been attacked. When they heard Hamor say he would pay any price to allow Dinah to be his son Shechem’s bride. Jacob’s sons made the argument, that Leah could not marry any man that wasn’t circumcision cause it would disgrace them.

Genesis 34:14 They said to them, “We cannot do this thing, to give our sister to one who is uncircumcised, for that would be a disgrace to us.

Hamor said no price was too high, so he agreed that his son would be circumcised & not only that, but the King Hamor & all the men of the land her rule over, would circumcise. So every man of King Hamor’s had his foreskin cut off & they were all in pain. Jacob sons took advantage of Hivite man’s weakness, & put them all to death with their swords. Not only did they murder men who were just circumcise, they looted everything belong to them, even their children & wives. Jacob’s heart was greatly troubled by the hateful act of his son, because he knew the other people of another kingdom would do this evil act. Rumors got around back then got around like they do now & bad reputation people will  have a founding place to stay and live. Did the sons of Jacob have the freedom written about in Galatians 5:1, the mark of  circumcision, no they didn’t have a desire to obey their God  like Jesus does. When we love our Father God, like the Messiah does, the Father & Son will come live inside our hearts & freedom will live within believers of Christ. There is more freedom in living the part that comes naturally with Christ , rather than trying to look for the part without Christ. God bless you, the Lord Jesus loves you & so do I. Amen! Sam H.

John 8:33 They answered Him, “We are Abraham’s descendants and have never yet been enslaved to anyone; how is it that You say, ‘You will become free’?”34 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is the slave of sin. 35 The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son does remain forever.
