Exodus 20:7 His Names Is Love, Not Vanity

The third commandment of God may be misunderstood as in using God’s name with foul language. It is very pleasant to hear any foul or unwholesome words, but taking God’s name in vain is far more profanity.The word vain is mentioned in the third commandment as if God doesn’t His name in vain fashion. For those who don’t know what the definition of vain is, I will show you. Vain has an adjective, meaning it word that means action.

 Definition of vain 1  having or showing undue or excessive pride in one’s appearance or achievements : CONCEITED 

2 : marked by futility or ineffectualness : UNSUCCESSFUL, USELESS vain efforts to escape 

3 : having no real value : IDLE, WORTHLESS vain pretensions

4 archaic : FOOLISH, SILLY

None of these definitions fit the Lord, in fact the whole  Ten Commandments are the characteristic of God. Scripture defines God as love;

1 John 4:7 Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. 8 The one who does not love does not know God, for God is love.

Scriptures says love is the fulfillment of God’s law and the action of love is a vain, empty movement;

James 2:8  If, however, you are fulfilling the royal law according to the Scripture, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” you are doing well.

So according to Scripture how can someone take God’s name in vain & make Jehovah, the Great I Am, the Lord and Jesus sound like vanity or meaning empty.  Are Christians, who call themselves that because they follow Christ’s teaching of love, allow to show a dislike, or hate, or even not allow them to join in worship of the Lord? Let’s ask Scripture;

Isaiah 56:4-6  For thus says the Lord, “To the eunuchs who keep My sabbaths, And choose what pleases Me, And hold fast My covenant, 5 To them I will give in My house and within My walls a memorial, And a name better than that of sons and daughters; I will give them an everlasting name which will not be cut off. 6  “Also the foreigners who join themselves to the Lord, To minister to Him, and to love the name of the Lord, To be His servants, every one who keeps from profaning the sabbath And holds fast My covenant;

The Lord doesn’t not exclude His love to just one group of people, ancient Israel, had pride or a vain thought , the Lord was only their God. But in word of God, and read from, Isaiah 56:4-6 anyone was allowed to keep the Lord’s sabbaths, worship in His house and be named His son or daughter, even to non-Israelite or foreigners as verse six says.  So if any dislike or hate is given to anyone and you call yourself a Christian, you have taken His Holy name in vain. By this kind of action a person has not only made God’s name meaningless, but has broken the second commandment of God. My beloved, the Lord wants us to be loving when we call ourselves by His name. 1 John 4:19  We love, because He first loved us. 20 If someone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for the one who does not love his brother whom he has seen, cannot love God whom he has not seen. 21 And this commandment we have from Him, that the one who loves God should love his brother also.
