Colossians 4:14 The King’s Medicine
Luke, the beloved physician, sends you his greetings, and Demas does also.
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr preached a sermon on Sunday, June 3, 1958, to a United Presbyterian Church in Pittsburgh, Pa. He told the congregation he had an imaginary letter written by the apostle Paul and it was mailed to the Christian churches of America. Dr. King and Paul’s imaginary letter preached many things to the Christians of America that the Holy Spirit felt they needed to hear. The apostle Paul marveled at the advancement the American society had provided the world, and one of them was in medicine. Paul sent his greetings and that grace and peace be unto you and me, through our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
I have heard of your great medical advances which have resulted in the curing of many dread plagues and diseases and, thereby, prolonging your lives and making for greater security and physical well-being. All of that is marvelous. You can do so many things in your day that I could not do in the Greco-Roman world of my day. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Since the USA became an official country in 1776, American doctors have made many medical advancements. Benjamin Franklin himself invents the bifocal eyeglasses. In 1844 laughing gas was created to help dentist visits less painful. In 1879, American medicine produced a vaccine to help rid the world of many sicknesses; 1879: a vaccine for cholera. 1881: a vaccine for anthrax. 1882: a vaccine for rabies. 1896: a vaccine for typhoid fever. 1897: a vaccine for plague. In 1922, Insulin was first used to treat diabetes in American medicine. In 1942, penicillin was created. In 1955, the polio vaccine was developed, and my mother received it and saved from losing the use of her legs. If Christians were to read and study God’s word, they would see the author of the gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles was a doctor. American medicine prolongs life but does nothing for morals or to help anyone live godly. When Sildenafil was created in 1989, in common English is called viagra, infidelity has risen, and the outbreak of sexually transmitted diseases. Even if birth control is available, unwanted, or unplanned children are still being born or aborted. Even if Insulin was created in 1922, it does nothing for obesity and Americans dying from a diabetic coma. The word of God has many written words to help a person live longer, physically, mentally, socially, sexually, and spiritually. Sadly, Christians depend on medicine, doctors, pills, and vaccines to trust and obey God, even if their lives depend on it. Are you following the same God and Physician the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. preached about? Why is the United States of America the most medicated nation globally but not one country of God? It is because they reject the natural medicine for sin and love themselves too much, even love God at all. God bless you all. Jesus, the Great Physician, loves you, and so do I. Amen.
