Matthew 5:33-37 Do Not Swear in God’s Name or Bear False Witness

Matthew 5:33-37

33 “Again, you have heard that the ancients were told, ‘You shall not make false vows, but shall fulfill your vows to the Lord.’ 34 But I say to you, make no oath at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, 35 or by the earth, for it is the footstool of His feet, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. 36 Nor shall you make an oath by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black. 37 But let your statement be, ‘Yes, yes’ or ‘No, no’; anything beyond these is of evil.

Jesus was & is teaching His followers that He did not to do away the law of God In the greatest sermon ever preached, Jesus commanded us not to do what God ten Commandments tell us not to do. He you should not murder or even hate. He says forgive like Jesus forgives. He says be loyal to your spouse in marriage, This next Bible passage is a combination of two Commandments.

Exodus 20:7 “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not leave him unpunished who takes His name in vain.

Exodus 20:16 “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

The Lord takes His name seriously, He knows name creates life & word is faithful. The promises He makes, He will fulfill therefore His name is not vain & He doesn’t want any false statement .It is a habit by many people that if they want to make a powerful statement, they will say, “I swear to God.’  but tell us in the Bible passage, Jesus is saying don’t make an oath or swear to God to keep your words. You can’t speak for God & you know for yourself, you are nowhere near as honest as the Lord God. This is not a new teaching of the Holy word of God. King Solomon wrote in the book of Ecclesiastes & that is anything without the God, is empty & meaningless.

Ecclesiastes 5:4 When you make a vow to God, do not be late in paying it; for He takes no delight in fools. Pay what you vow! 5 It is better that you should not vow than that you should vow and not pay. 6 Do not let your speech cause you to sin and do not say in the presence of the messenger of God that it was a mistake. Why should God be angry on account of your voice and destroy the work of your hands? 7 For in many dreams and in many words there is emptiness. Rather, fear God.

King Solomon is teaching what Jesus teaches us in the New Testament, simply don’t make oaths to God or use His name in a vow.  Even if you make your yes mean yes or no mean no, your human is not God’s heart.

Jeremiah 17:9 “The heart is more deceitful than all else And is desperately sick; Who can understand it?

My dear beloved, just don’t use God’s name in vain, don’t swear in God, cause you never really know what is  going to happen tomorrow or within the next minutes. Just keep from lying in general & always the Lord’s name seriously. God bless you all, the Lord Jesus loves you & so do I. Sam H.

James 5:12  But above all, my brethren, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or with any other oath; but your yes is to be yes, and your no, no, so that you may not fall under judgment.
