1 Corinthians 14:20-25 The Gift of Tongues Shouldn’t Sound like Baby Talk

1 Corinthians 14:20-25

20 Brethren, do not be children in your thinking; yet in evil be infants, but in your thinking be mature.²¹ In the Law it is written, “By men of strange tongues and by the lips of strangers I will speak to this people, and even so they will not listen to Me,” says the Lord. ²² So then tongues are for a sign, not to those who believe but to unbelievers; but prophecy is for a sign, not to unbelievers but to those who believe. ²³ Therefore if the whole church assembles together and all speak in tongues, and ungifted men or unbelievers enter, will they not say that you are mad? ²⁴ But if all prophesy, and an unbeliever or an ungifted man enters, he is convicted by all, he is called to account by all; ²⁵ the secrets of his heart are disclosed; and so he will fall on his face and worship God, declaring that God is certainly among you.

The apostle Paul isn’t putting down the Gift of Tongues in 1 Corinthians 14, but he was simply saying, there is a proper way to use it, & worship should be done in order, & finally Spiritual Gift is used for evangelism or edifying the church. In verses if 20 to 25 starts out by saying, do not think like children or be evil like infants. But you might wonder how can infants be evil, & I thought the same myself. In a house of worship, children & infants are really involved during a worship service. They are being taken care of in a nursery so they won’t disturb the adults.  Paul was saying the gift of tongues should be in a proper way & not sound like infant or baby talk & have more knowledge of God’s word, then the knowledge of a child. Because an infant doesn’t know who to talk to or even use complete sentences, and the child even when he or she knows how to talk, doesn’t really know what they are saying. Plus Paul says the gift of tongues is for non-believers, how often non-believers are in a full assembly. Paul even said if a visit comes to worship and witness worshipers, speaking like a but of infants or different language that no one understands, the visitor might think you are mad. My friends, me & cousin went to a church worship, like this once, the service started normal, but as it continue, the man & women were speaking in a language that sound like a Star Trek episode, then a woman was no the floor & her dress was rising up & she was showing her underclothes, the children were crying & scared. Me & my cousin were looking at each other & just laughing, we basically saw not worship or praise to God, but a bunch of people who wanted attention to themselves. Paul does say if Spiritual Gift are used correctly & if a man or woman’s secret of the heart are shown to them. If the person throws himself to the floor & gives himself to the Lord, then the Spiritual Gift work & God is within your church. God bless you all, the Lord loves you & so do I. Sam H.
